Kenya is beautiful and the city of Homa Bay is a fantastic extended weekend getaway for both families and lovers. The distance from Nairobi is approximately 365-420 KM depending on your route.
It would take a 6-7 hrs picturesque driving trip each way. In the interest of seeing more of Kenya, you can drive the B3 through Narok and Bomet on the way there. On the return, you can use the A104 and enjoy vistas of the great Rift Valley driving through Nakuru and Naivasha.
Homa Bay is south of Kisumu and is not typically considered a tourist destination. Just before arriving in Homa Bay, there’s another lesser known area called Kendu Bay. It is south of the Sondu Miriu Hydroelectric Power Station. At Kendu bay, kids swim, dive and frolic in the bay waters, locals can be seen washing clothes and filling water into bright yellow jerry cans.
Homa Bay also has a lively fish market which has a constant supply of fresh fish from incoming boats. The Nile perch is a mainstay of this fish economy.
If you go for nothing else. Please go for the view of the extent of Lake Victoria. The best view can be tapped from the hills surrounding Homa Bay.
Other attractions include: Rusinga Island, Ruma National Park and Simbi Nyaima Lake. This last attraction is in between Homa Bay and Kendu Bay.
